The Monet Garden of Muskegon is located at the
corner of Clay Avenue and Fifth Street in the Historic District of downtown
Muskegon. A local
businesswoman and Master Gardener, Florence Bright, had an idea which grew
into a shared vision and commitment by the City of Muskegon,
The
Community
Foundation for Muskegon County and local
Master Gardeners.
The famous Monet Garden in Giverny,
France provided the inspiration to transform a vacant city lot into a
picturesque pocket park. The garden is
free to the public and the purpose is multi faceted. It was built to
beautify the downtown area, to allow students a place to paint and learn, to
have a beautiful place for both our community and for tourists to
visit, to provide training for gardeners as well as build awareness and give
recognition for volunteerism and community spirit.
Thousands
of volunteer hours, business donations, the community fund and the support
of the City of Muskegon have all gone into building and maintaining the garden. As
Michigan State University's interest in the Muskegon County Master Gardener
program diminished, the
Master Gardeners formed an independent club, "Lakeshore Garden Masters" and continue to
maintain the gardens. You are invited to stop by the gardens and watch it
grow.
